So we made our cake and ate it too…of sorts anyways.

The construction day started off at 8:00 am with Teri, Dani, Oz, Erin, Logan #2 and I ready to go…only we didn’t have any of our canned food. So after waiting for a bit and having a donut (or two – OZ) we started construction with our Architect JR. We laid out the great doily Lea put together, after some confusion as to why it wasn’t centered – then we remembered the cake slice… From there, we just started to build up.

It wasn’t completely smooth sailing though. Half our cans were take hostage by the Girl Scouts. We had to buy some cookies to get our cans back… j/k! Maybe that’s what happened last year with our El Pato!

Then, there was a small mutiny while Teri was out. We decided that the inside cake layers looked a little odd since they were the same “color” as the frosting – white. It was hard to tell what it was. So we decided to just turn the cans the other way so it visually looked different and you could see the layers. Then, being so close to done, we were still a few cans short! Luckily, Daph found the right number of cans at CostCo. While waiting for Daph and the cans, we decided to NOT use the “salmon” cans on the top layer as the ribbon and instead used the Arizona Tea. So – in short, it was an evolving cake that was really great! Sorry we had too much sugar and built it all before the other teams could come by!

Now, it wouldn’t be a Glenn Group project if we didn’t win something, right? We won Juror’s Favorite! The judges said that they liked how the cake had a piece pulled out and you could “see the different layers” and they especially likes the cake toppers – Mrs. Buttersworth and the Quakers Oats guys! They also liked the floor mat. So good job everyone!

The New York Times has a new blog called “Measure for Measure” about the creative process of songwriters. Andrew Bird, Roseanne Cash, Suzanne Vega and Darrell Brown are the contributors, and they each delve pretty personally into their own creative methods, how they get ideas and what it takes to get those ideas from random fragments sloshing around in the brain to finished works of art. The most recent post by Darrell Brown is about how songwriters (and probably all writers, creatives, and artists) are secretly “emotional spies,” who have to stay alert and take notes on all the things we see and conversations we overhear. He goes through the process of writing a song, from the moment he jotted down a phrase he overheard at a party to getting lyrics down on paper with his songwriting partner. There are some other really great posts, too, like the one where Andrew Bird says the best thing for his writing is just wandering or riding around an unfamiliar town.

Improv Everywhere turned a Hermosa Beach Little League game into something worthy of the majors. Pretty funny, especially when NBC Sports shows up.
