The governor of West Virginia wants people to know that his state is way more than inbred toothless hillbillies and connoisseurs of roadkill. And what better way to do it than launch a multi-million dollar marketing effort to lure businesses, “young leaders,” families and just about anyone else with a healthy mouthful of choppers to come and populate the “Wild and Wonderful” state. Despite it’s noble beginnings as the pro-union/anti-slavery half of Virginia during the Civil War, WV has taken a big PR hit over the past century mainly due to images of bicuspid impaired mountain folk speaking unintelligible, heavily-accented English. But what most people don’t realize is how spectacular WV is. Outside the strip-mined hollows, the state is chock full of lush green mountains, and most towns are little more than a couple of hours from D.C. and Pittsburgh. So will WV be successful in marketing themselves out of a stereotype? They have some good ideas, but I guess we’ll have to wait to see if they have any teeth.
