Here is a photo taken by a low flying aircraft as it passes over a village deep within the amazon rain forest of Brazil near Peru. Apparently this is a previously undiscovered group of indigenous persons that have lived in the amazon for quite some time and have never made contact with industrialized society. This photo and more (which are untouched) can be found here. To me the photo looks like something out a Steven Spielberg movie or something, look at the people, they are painted red… that is crazy! But if these are a previously unknown group of people living in the Amazon in relative harmony with their surroundings, it begs the question why our industrialized society can’t seem to do the same. With all of our wizz-bang technology and iPods and Starbucks coffees we seem to polluting more and more, emitting increasing amounts of greenhouse gases and generally making the earth a more polluted place… everyday. Would this previously undiscovered group of people be a better steward of the earth than industrialized man? If it weren’t for the painting themselves red (which is a dead giveaway that they are a little crazy) they could make a compelling areguement that they are more intelligent stewards of the earth than industrialized society; and therefore we could learn a thing or two about sustainability from them. Minus the red body paint I would be inclined to agree, you don’t see them clear cutting large swaths of forest, emitting millions of tons of greenhouse gases and installing air conditioned bus stops in Dubai.

I’m having trouble figuring out why red body paint makes them crazy. Anyway…
I’m curious about the population density of the tribe(s), especially considering your word, “sustainability”. If this is indeed a society based around hunting and gathering, I’m sure there is a wealth of knowledge on how many people could realistically live in a given space. That said, agriculture and industry developed due to fairly clear cut factors and I don’t think our culture’s reaction to the body paint would be the biggest hurdle for your “compelling [argument]“.

I would burn down an entire forest before I would wear an organic “man thong”. I am OK with the red paint as long as its low in VOC’s.

Apparently this is not a lost tribe. I was watching G4 the other night and they explained that the Brazilian government has been keeping tabs on this indigenous group for over 60 years or something. The website linked above used this to make a counterpoint to globalization. So for what it’s worth.
